Empowering Education by Ira Shor

1.        “He urged teachers to encourage students 10 question their experience in school: "You must arouse children’s curiosity and make them think about school. For example, it's very important to begin the school year with a discussion of why we KO to school. Why does the government force us to go to school? This would set a questioning tone and show the children that you trust them and that they are intelligent enough. At their own level, to investigate and come up with answers" (Meier 1990)” (Shor). This is so important for the kids because I feel like they need to be in touch with their curiosity side. If they understand these things, they may understand a little bit more and would want to do well in school. Kids always have questions, and this might help them understand why they are there and learning what they are learning in the classroom.  2.      “In a curriculum that encourage, student questioning, the teacher avoids, a ...

Tracking: Why Schools Need to Take Another Route by Jeanne Oakes

"Students who are placed in high groups have access to far richer schooling experiences than other students" (Oakes). I believe that this is so true because the students who are in schools that have more resources have better grades than the students who are in schools that do not have the resources that they need. It is so sad because students should have the same opportunity no matter where they go to school. I am not saying that every student who attends a school that doesn't have the resources never gets good grades, but those resources could really help them accell later in life. They could get the skills that they need to forever changing society. The area that the school is in that does not have the resources that it needs might not have the money to get those resources. It is a shame that schools do not the access to get what the students need. In my school, in my opinion, there are many students that need some extra help and either the school d...

Service Learning Experience Linked to Three Authors and Link to Map of Authors

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CNNbxUIU0Dv24S0EwuJaOtq6mKtCQsGFskHr6sBfmxc/edit?usp=sharing    *This is the link that goes to my map of authors In my class most of the children are Hispanic and some of them do speak Spanish at home but when they are at school, they speak English. When I get there my class is in library and they always color a picture that is related to the book that the library teacher reads to them. I always go table to table to talk to everyone and there was a table full of girls that were speaking Spanish. When I got closer to the table, they stopped speaking Spanish and told me that they were practicing speaking Spanish and they went back to speaking it. I do not know how to speak in Spanish, so I have no idea what they were saying but I thought it was cool because as they went back to speaking Spanish, I said to myself that there is probably someone at home that does not speak any English so they need to learn how to communicate with them at this...

Kliewer: Citizenship in school: Reconceptualizing Down Syndrome “Now we know that people with disabilities can learn and have a full, rich life. The challenge is to erase negative attitudes about people with developmental disabilities, get rid of the stereotypes and break the barriers for people with disabilities” (Kliewer). I find it so disgusting that people actually think that it is okay to have all these negative attitudes towards people with disabilities. These kids want nothing more than just to fit on and feel normal but unfortunately it is so hard for them to be accepted. These kids are so smart and unique in their own way that they could be so resourceful to other children.  “It’s not like they come here to be labeled, or to believe the label. We’re all here—kids, teachers, parents, whoever—it’s about all of us working together, playing together, being together, and that’s what learning is. Don’t tell me any of these kids are being set up to fail” (Kliewer). These kid...

Separate and unequal by Bob Hebert a.       “Educators know that it is very difficult to get consistently good results in schools characterized by high concentrations of poverty” (Hebert). I truly believe this because if a child goes to school hungry then all those kids think about is when they are going to be able to eat rather than focusing on what is being taught in the class. Since they do live in poverty then they are more likely to get sick because they might not have the best hygiene practices and not the means of calling the doctor to get the right medicine that they might need to get better. That would cause them to miss a lot of school and then they would fall far behind or they might have to repeat that grade. When kids have to repeat a grade, they can get very frustrated and then they might stop trying in school all together.  b.       “Long years of evidence show that poor kids of all ethnic backgrounds do better a...

In the Service of What? By Kahne and Westheimer

“Instead, his class focused on inculcating a sense of civic duty. His high school seniors were not asked to articulate and understanding of the conditions and contexts that might have contributed to the loss of a family’s home or to a pregnant mother’s decision to turn to crack cocaine” (Kahne & Westheimer). I think that it is great that Mr. Johnsons class did this, but I feel like connecting to these people that they are helping on a personal level would make it more meaningful. It seems like the senior class was just doing it to get it over to get the credit to pass the class. I really like that the teacher made this a requirement for the class. I wish that when I was in high school that we had to do this. I love helping people and making them feel like they are humans and not just mess ups. Every year I always make sure I do at least two things that give back to the community. Whether it is attending soup kitchens to help out or cleaning out my clothes and donate them to ...
