In the Service of What? By Kahne and Westheimer
“Instead, his class focused on inculcating a sense of civic duty. His high school seniors were not asked to articulate and understanding of the conditions and contexts that might have contributed to the loss of a family’s home or to a pregnant mother’s decision to turn to crack cocaine” (Kahne & Westheimer). I think that it is great that Mr. Johnsons class did this, but I feel like connecting to these people that they are helping on a personal level would make it more meaningful. It seems like the senior class was just doing it to get it over to get the credit to pass the class. I really like that the teacher made this a requirement for the class. I wish that when I was in high school that we had to do this. I love helping people and making them feel like they are humans and not just mess ups. Every year I always make sure I do at least two things that give back to the community. Whether it is attending soup kitchens to help out or cleaning out my clothes and donate them to a good charity. I do feel like if students do have to some kind of community service for school, they should at least try to connect to the people they are helping. I feel like they would get a better experience out of “As Lawrence Cremin explains, these educator’s curriculum, “by manipulating the school curriculum, they could ultimately change the world”” (Kahne & Westheimer). I totally agree with this. People these can be so focused on their own lives that if they took one day a month to give back to their communities, they would be so much more grateful of what they have. There are some people that only care about when the next PlayStation or the next iPhone is coming out. They do not realize that there are people would love nothing more than you time and a warm blanket.
“For example, students in Atlanta must complete 75 hours of volunteer service to graduate. Maryland now requires that all high students preform 75 hours of community service prior to graduation or patriciate in an alternate district program approved by the state” (Khane & Westheimer). I feel like this is such a great idea for schools to do this. This gets students used to working out in the public and to get to know their community a little more. If they want to get a degree in teaching, then the community service hours would look good. It also makes them look like good people and feel good about themselves.
I agree that students should have so many hours of volunteer work in order to graduate. I feel like seeing how the real world works beyond a classroom is very important to understanding life beyond school.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with your last point! I chose that quote as well. I feel like having to complete community service hours as a graduation requirement is very beneficial for students.
ReplyDeleteI feel like some students don't really take advantage of service learning and realize how truly beneficial it is not only to them but their community as well.
