Safe Places by August
I do believe that schools and communities should be welcoming of the LGBT community because they are people just like you and me. Unfortunately there are people in the world that do not think that it is okay for a women to love another women or a man to love another man. If it is not affecting their life directly then what is the big deal? For me personally if you are a man and love another man good for you. If they treat you right and make you happy then go for it because why should I hate on people who are just trying to live a happy life.
"Classrooms lay the foundations for an inclusion and safe society: a just community where common interests and individual differences coexist" (August). I would like to say that this is true and actually happens but in some places it does not. We live in a society that the LGBT community is more accepted but in some areas of the United States it is still not totally accepted. Why can't we accept people for who they are? If they are not killing anyone or doing harm to anyone what does it matter if a women wants to marry a women or a man wants to marry a man. There are some areas that accept the LGBT community with open arms and individuals in those community who are gay or bisexual feel more comfortable to be themselves which I think is great.
"It is important to note that we are not arguing for an explicit discussion of sex in our classrooms. But just as recognition of heterosexual romantic themes can help students understand literary passages, so can the recognition of same-sex attraction" (August). I think that it is very important for children to understand what same-sex relationships are at a young age so then as they grow up they know about it and won;t be confused about it. The more these kids know more about it then they could help teach other kids about it so that more kids will be comfortable around people who are dating the same sex. I feel like the more someone knows about a certain topic they seem to be super chill about it and are not super weird when it is brought up in conversation. When someone is gay or lesbian they would feel more comfortable to come out to who they really are and they would feel like they wouldn't have to hide who they are.

"One LGBT student reported that her college instructor compared homosexuality to be bestiality" (August). This is such a gross thing to say and it is so disrespectful to the LGBT community. I will never fully understand why some people think loving someone of the same sex is so wrong. This college professor makes it sound like these are horrible people and some who are gay or lesbian may be afraid to come out because they do not to be compared to bestiality. Blows my mind that this professor thinks that way. If this professor was educated at a young age about some-sex relationships than I do not think that he would be saying things like that.

I agree with the points that you made and the last quote on how the college instructor openly disrespected the LGBT community disgusts me.
ReplyDelete"If they treat you right and make you happy then go for it because why should I hate on people who are just trying to live a happy life." - AMEN! I think everyone should live their life carefree and happy.
ReplyDeleteThe college professor needs to be more mindful of others, and more open to other people's ways of thinking. Disgusting how people like him believe loving someone of the same sex is wrong.
I 100% agree with the points you made. It is sad how unfairly treated the LGBTQ community is. They are no different than anyone else that is "straight" so they should not be treated any differently.
