Unlearning the Myths that Blind Us by Christensen
I found that this article to be very interesting because I never thought that way before. I did not give a thought that so many things in others surroundings could shape a persons thinking of someone else. After thinking about it, it is so true that the media and even not being exposed to a certain atmosphere can have an affect on a child. It is so crazy to me that so many things can have such an affect on how children think about others.
"The impact of racism begins early. Even in our preschools years, we are exposed to misinformation about people different from ourselves. Many of us grow up in neighborhoods where we have limited opportunities to interact with people different from our own families..." (Tatum). I believe that this quote is so true because children are exposed to it even if they are not aware of it. If they are watching television or just watching people interact with each other there might be a certain level of racism. I think that it is so sad to think that children at the preschool level are being witnesses to that because they are way to young to see that. When they group up they might think that certain things are okay to do or say when they are really not okay.
"Many students don;t wan to believe that they have been manipulated by children's media or advertising. No one wants to admit that they've been "handled" by the media" (Christensen). I do not know when this was written but in today's time this quote makes me laugh because kids are always on some kind of media site. They are always exposed to something that they are not supposed to see and they would think that it is okay because everything on the internet is true in their eyes. These students do not want to admit to something that is wrong when they think it is right. It is sad because they should be playing outside with friends not worrying about what is going on in the social media world. When I was younger I was not allowed to be on the computer for more than an hour and I did not have a cell phone until I was in 7th grade and there were no touch screens or texting at the time.
"Both young women wanted the race of the actors changed but they didn't challenge the class or underlying gender inequalities that also characterize the lives of Cinderella, Ariel the Mermaid, and Snow White" (Christensen). If no one stands up to make a difference then the thing you want changed is never going to get changed. If people wanted more African Americans as actors back then they should have made more of a voice about it because that is why all those princess movies the princess was white. In today's time it is starting to change and there are more African American princess's which is fantastic.

I agree with you in the sense that I had never really given the idea that we are so heavily influenced by what we watch as kids to have such a huge impact on us until now.
ReplyDeleteI had never paid attention to the stereotypes in fairytales until recently! I never realized how much impact what we watched as children would have on us as adults now
